Timeline: 3 Weeks

The goal was to create an app that connected people with the natural world and made them feel like their efforts to help were worth it.

Proto-Persona

Proto-Persona (Edited).jpg

We began by building a proto-persona to guide our research and focus our target audience. This is how we came up with Mark Wilding, a young adult who was passionate about helping the environment but didn’t have enough time to dedicate hours to projects. He also is someone who will do things when they are easy but gets discouraged about the impact of his actions.

User Research

Affinity Diagram with quotes.jpg

Here is an affinity diagram we made of the user research interviews we conducted. From it we drew out what was most important to people in regards to helping the planet. We also determined people’s past times to see how we could incorporate our app into their every day lives. Above are some of the most interesting quotes from the interviews.

Persona

From our research we came up with our persona, Mike Fields, a young professional that wants to make a difference for the environment but doesn’t know how. He also gets discouraged because he is unsure whether the actions he does do are actually making an impact for the world and for his community.

Ideation

An important step in our ideation process was creating a storyboard, where Mike goes through his life and has our app solve a problem for him. This allowed us to visualize aspects of the app and its function in every day life.

Ideation:Dot voting.jpg

Another exercise that we did to help flesh out the app concept was to do an “I Like, I Wish, What If” ideation to see what features we wanted to include in the app, both initially and down the road.

Low-fi prototype w: border.png

Here is our initial low to mid-fi prototype that we put together of Pathkeeper, an app that you can use to find paths near you to clean up and gamifies the experience. Various changes were made due to user testing, including a major re-haul of the home screen (top left) so that we could bring more emphasis to the map and declutter it visually. We also found that our tutorial and onboarding process needed to be more clear for users so that they could understand not only the purpose of the app but also the functionality of the gaming side of it.
